More evidence to why almonds and almondie are such a nutritious and nourishing food....
Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, better known as Maimonides, was a brilliant medieval philosopher, scholar, and physician. He was a student of Aristotelian philosophy and a great rabbinic authority as well. His works have been studied throughout history by noted philosophers, such as Sir Isaac Newton.
In Maimonides’ writings about how to lead a healthy lifestyle, he delineates the importance of eating appropriate and healthy foods. “One should refrain from [eating] tree fruits. He should not eat too many of them, even dried and certainly fresh. Before they ripen entirely they are as swords to the body. So too, carobs are always harmful. All sour fruit are harmful. One should eat only a bit of them in the summer and in hot climates. Figs, grapes and almonds are always beneficial, both fresh and dry. One may eat of them as much as he wants (lit., "all his need").”[1][1]Retrieved from http://www.torah.org/learning/mlife/ch4laws917.html?print=1
According to Maimonides, all fruits, no matter how sweet or nutrient-rich, contains also a little bit of ‘poison’, a bit of harmful substance. Perhaps he was referring to the acidic nature of fruits, which can definitely aggravate a stomach. In any case, the almond is an exception to this rule. Says Maimonides, almonds are entirely good, so eat to your heart’s content!
Today, nearly 1,000 later, modern scientists have discovered why Maimonides approved of the almond, and highly recommend it as well. Packed inside each tiny nut are an outstanding number of vitamins, minerals, and protein. When you want to make a long story short, you say in “in a nutshell” in order to consolidate all the important details. That’s the power of a nut. Almonds play a role in preventing heart disease. They contain rhizveritrol, an anti-inflammatory agent found in red wine. Almonds are also chock full of unsaturated (“good”) fat, which helps in raising HDL levels (the good cholesterol) and lowering the dangerous LDL levels. Almonds themselves are cholesterol-free! Almonds are an excellent source of fiber. Fiber helps promote a healthy digestive system by keeping food moving throughout the digestive tract.
