Grazing for Markets

Where can I find a farmers market in my area?

  • Look online at www.nyfarmersmarket.com/metro.html.
  • Greenmarket in New York City has its own listings at www.cenyc.org/HTMLGM/schedule.html.

Is the produce really fresh?
Yes, it’s picked the night before or that morning.

How can I make sure I get the freshest stuff?
Come early. The markets often sell out on busy days, and you'll get produce that hasn’t been sitting in the sun as long.

Is it all locally grown?
Vendors are supposed to sell only what they bake, make, grow or catch themselves. The majority are from New York State. The Greenmarket also has growers from Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Are the prices cheaper at farmers markets?
Not always. But consumers say they value the fact that the food is fresher and better quality.

Do farmers offer samples?
Some do. Others simply say that if you’re not happy with the product, you can return it.
